How We Became Surfers!

Last April, Let’s go Surfing’s ambassadors came to Across Australia to present their products and kindly offered to take us on our first surfing experience @ the Legendary Bondi Beach. Bondi is named after an aboriginal word meaning “the sound of waves breaking over rocks”.

The date of the lesson was set: Saturday 7th of August 2010 12:00pm.

Let’s Go Surfing was established in 1995 by two longtime and active members of the Australian surfing community, Brenda Miley and Craig Wachholz.  It is Bondi Beach’s only licensed surfing school and has been voted as one of the top 3 tourist activities in Sydney.

Surfing Many people have always wanted to surf but don’t know how to go about it, in addition the equipment, the ocean, the other surfers and the complexity of surfing may be very daunting to the uninitiated.  But when properly shown how, surfing is an activity that everyone can enjoy at their own level. Let’s Go Surfing has introduced thousands of people into the world of surfing and exposed them to its benefits of spiritual, emotional and physical well-being and our team is one of those happy learners, just read the following!

Once you have booked your first surfing lesson during winter in Sydney, you never know what the weather could be on the D-Day …so we were naturally a little bit nervous and scared…

Surfing We all woke up relieved on the Saturday morning as the sun was shining outside!  We arrived @ Bondi, it was a bit windy but nothing that could stop us! We were ready to catch the waves!  We met Tim, our surf instructor from Tahiti who, by the way, started surfing at 8 years old!  After putting our wetsuits on, Tim took us to the beach for a short brief so we could understand the Ocean, the waves and how surfers interact with it!  So interesting!  There is so much going on out there!

[SinglePic not found]With our surf in hand, Tim taught us how to paddle, do the ‘yoga’ and stand up on the board!  And finally … it was time to get in the water to catch the waves: JUST AWESOME!  Very hard to stand on the boards but we loved it!  Tim was always around to help us and check everyone was enjoying & improving.  After catching a few waves…in the face…we were quickly exhausted and realised how hard surfing is and how much practice is needed.  It is said to be the third hardest sport!

After an hour and a half, it was the end of the lesson and as a reward, we lunched at the North Bondi RSL.  The restaurant has an amazing view on Bondi beach and we appreciated the dishes a lot: meat, fish and chips, pasta … great choices!

We are keen to surf again sometime soon and we would like to say a big ‘Thank you’ to the Let’s go Surfing Team for giving us the chance to experiment such a thrill. Surfing is an amazing feeling; you get this sensation of freedom, speed and strength of the wave lifting you to the beach! We all very much enjoyed our day.

Thank you again to all the Team at Let’s Go Surfing – and especially to Tim, our nice and patient instructor!
We will be back!
